Discovered about 60 years ago, Tanzanite is a rare gemstone found only in Tanzania. This precious stone varies in blue to violet colors, but can show different colors when viewed at different angles.
As one of the most limited and exclusive stones in the world, it is one thousand times rarer than a diamond, which makes Tanzanite one of the most coveted gemstones in the world. The sources are limited and have not been found in any other part of the world.
Tiffany & Co. gave the gemstone the name Tanzanite shortly after its discovery and launched a campaign in 1968 to give it international fame among jewelry lovers. Today, one of the largest sellers is Tanzanite International, which has made its home in the Caribbean.
Most jewelry purchases are spontaneous and fun—especially while you are traveling. I was not planning on buying my set on Tanzanite, but I fell in love with the gem. Just so you know, the pure blue is usually more expensive. Lucky for me, I really like the more lilac, lighter blue. Why? Because that is the color I wanted.
While I was checking out all the beautiful settings and stones, a manger walked up to me and asked me if I wanted to feel like a princess. Of course, my answer was yes! He walked back moments later with this stunning deep blue Tanzanite surrounded by hundreds of Crown of Light Diamonds, and placed it around my neck.
Knowing a little about gemstones, I knew that I could NOT afford this necklace. But my curiosity got the best of me so I said "I know that I cannot afford this, but out of curiosity, how much is it?"
My face before knowing the price...
My face after the price (taken a moment later)... That face was my silent communication to my husband to get this off my neck as soon as possible!
This incredible necklace was worth $150,000! Never would I have imagined wearing something as expensive as that necklace around my neck. But man, did it make me feel like a princess. It's not every day that you have the cost of a house gracing your body. It may not be a bucket list item, but that sure was a once in a lifetime experience for me!
I heard whispers around the store of buying in bulk to sell when all the mines run out. People often look at jewelry as a sparkly investment that can be passed down through generations. However, if you are looking to resell them when you are back in states, you may be disappointed because gems are hard for an independent person to resell. People are going to be more likely to buy an exclusive stone from a reputable seller than from a regular Joe off the street. So, if that is your plan, I would second guess it.
In the end, I negotiated a fantastic deal on a ring, set of earrings, necklace and tennis bracelet. All with a beautiful Trillion cut! I could not be happier with our purchase, and I wear them every opportunity I can get. Because jewelry is for you to wear it!
